pH Studies (Bravo/Impedance)

Overview

pH Studies are essential for accurately diagnosing reflux. Given the widespread use of antacids, proper evaluation is crucial before starting long-term treatment. These medications may pose risks such as cardiovascular issues, mental decline, bone loss, and early mortality. Research indicates these risks could stem from disrupted gut flora due to non-acidic stomach conditions.

We advocate for testing before long-term therapy, as our studies show that nearly one-third of patients on antacids may not be on them.

BRAVO Chip

The BRAVO chip detects reflux and is typically placed endoscopically under light sedation. Patients should refrain from certain medications for two weeks prior. The chip records reflux over 4 days; patients continue their usual activities, allowing for symptom tracking. This method is preferred as it minimally impacts daily life, with less than 1% of patients experiencing discomfort.

Impedance Probe |

The impedance probe is utilized identify both acid and weak or nonid reflux. This test lasts 24 hours and involves inserting a thin probe through your nose, which connects to a recording device. During the 24-hour period, you can continue with your normal activities. The probe can be taken out after 24 hours. It is more noticeable than the BRAVO probe and serves as a secondary diagnostic test for reflux, providing additional data to complement the BRAVO results.
